An Overview of Human Resources Certifications by HRCI and SHRM

Why should you become certified? When you become certified, you can establish your credibility as a professional with deep knowledge and understanding of HR practice. The certification validates that you meet the standards of excellence in the field of Human Resources. In addition, it will set you apart from those who are new in the field or don’t have the certification. It certainly provides an advantage in seeking a new career opportunity in the HR field or receiving promotions.

How can you get certified as an HR professional? There are various options for you to be certified by a credited organization. The most popular option to get certified in the field of HR is that you must pass either the PHR/SPHR exam certified by HRCI  or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP by SHRM.

Below is an overview of these exams.

The PHR/ SPHR Exam

Each PHR exam consists of 115 scored questions (mostly multiple-choice) + 25 pretest questions. The exam breaks down below:

» Employee and Labor Relations (39%)

» Business Management and Strategy (20%)

» Talent Planning and Acquisition (17%)

» Learning and Development (10%)

» Total Rewards (15%)

Each SPHR exam consists of 115 scored questions (mostly multiple-choice) + 25 pretest questions. The exam breaks down below:

» Leadership and Strategy (40%)

» Employee Relations and Engagement (20%)

» Talent Planning and Acquisition (16%)

» Learning and Development (12%)

» Total Rewards (12%)

The PHR/ SPHR Exam will be 2 hours and 30 minutes in length.

SHRM-CP /SHRM-SCP:

The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams consist of 134 multiple-choice questions, of which 80 are stand-alone knowledge-based questions and 54 are situational judgment items.

Candidates will have up to 4 hours to complete the exam.
